 Embodied Transformation
& Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

In this introductory presentation, Susan and Jacquie will discuss the impacts of racial trauma, oppression, liberation, joy and reconnecting to our embodied wisdom of the body as black people. They will examine the oppressions rooted within the contexts of social injustice in which we live and work and how SP honors and creates space for reconnecting to liberation, joy and transformation through the elements of a resourceful perspective. They will discuss how the foundations of SP offer a lens of orienting to the wisdom present for our clients that is more aligned with cultivating a relationship to our natural state of being that creates space for growth and transformation.

We, as black people from the African diaspora, those of us who are descendants of enslaved people, are born of trauma as it lives in our DNA. We have the experiences of our ancestors and generations in our bodies. Our enslaved ancestors did not own their bodies; they did not belong to them. As a result of this trauma that we have inherited, so many of us are disconnected from our bodies. Over generations, we have learned to live in our heads, not our bodies. In this talk, Jacquie and Susan will speak about how SP invites us into a relationship with our bodies and how to practice from a more embodied location that assists our clients on their journey of becoming embodied.

Susan and Jacquie will discuss SP's skills in establishing safety, changing procedural tendencies, moving in the world, and developing somatic resources that allow us the flexibility to respond differently to traumas as they come. In Level 1, we learn somatic resources, the intelligence of the body, and how, as a therapist, you can meet your client with whatever comes up from an understanding that it was from an adaptive origin and so much more. Susan and Jacquie will speak to the embodied transformation of SP practice and the journey of returning home to the wisdom of the body.

SP for Treatmeant of Trauma Training Information:
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a body-oriented, talk therapy that blends verbal dialogue, cognitive and emotional approaches, with physical interventions that directly address the implicit memories and neurobiological effects of trauma.

Level I of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute’s Training Program equips therapists to better understand the symptoms and issues of clients who suffer from past and ongoing trauma, neglect, and relational failures and to work with them in a more effective way. As a participant in our Level 1 SP for Trauma Themes course, you will learn effective, accessible interventions for working with dysregulated arousal,  disruptive behavioral patterns, disturbed cognitive and emotional processing, and the fragmented sense of self experienced by so many traumatized individuals.

By using bodily experience as a primary entry point in trauma therapy, rather than the events or the "story," SP attends to how the body holds the effects of trauma and  interfaces with emotions and cognitive meaning making. As you learn interventions that speak directly to how client issues are driven by the body and the nervous system, you will be able to directly impact the direction of treatment for client populations suffering from the effects of trauma.

By the end of the course, you will be able to apply SP skills with clients who are distressed or traumatized and adapt SP skills for more complex clinical situations.

We are honored and excited to create a partnership between the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (SPI) and Black Therapists Rock (BTR). Expanding the reach of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to marginalized and underserved communities throughout the world is a central goal at SPI, and we deeply appreciate this opportunity to collaborate and learn together.

At SPI, we are committed to an active, ongoing process of decolonizing our curriculum and integrating an anti-racist, anti-oppression perspective into our institute and our clinical work. Our partnership with BTR is an inspiring next step in this pursuit, and we are thrilled to welcome applications from BTR members into our professional training program. We are grateful to the BTR team for their support and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship between our two organizations.

Our work is not forceful. We believe that people do not need to be "fixed" or changed. We encourage curiosity and follow the unique, natural intelligence of each person and their body to cultivate the desired growth from within. Seeking to enhance human relationships and heal divisions, our paradigm is impelled by a set of overarching philosophical principles, interpersonal neurobiology, and mindfulness applied in interactive contexts.

Founded in 1981, the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (SPI) is dedicated to providing high-level training and resources in this approach throughout the world. In pursuit of the world becoming a better, more compassionate place, our vision is "to harness the wisdom of the body to liberate human potential."
Other Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Opportunities:
"I recently completed the SP Level 1 Training, and it has forever changed who I am, how I am present with myself, and how I am present with clients. Embodying the SP principles such as organicity and relational alchemy have been a gift and instrumental in a new way of being in the world. The SP skills and process have been invaluable, and I was able to begin safely integrating them into my practice while doing the training. The structure of the training was great, and the expertise of trainers, assistants, consultants, and support of a peer practice group have all contributed to the effective SP work I am able to do with clients today. As a person of colour and a gay man, I felt safe and welcomed into the SP community. One of the things I have also come to really appreciate about the SP approach, is how integrative it is with other psychotherapy modalities such as EMDR. I genuinely don’t know how I would be able to work with clients who have experienced trauma without having been trained in SP – our bodies do hold so much wisdom! I look forward to doing the SP Level 2 training."
