Bridging Across Divisions:

SPI’s Global DEI Statement, 2025

As many of us find ourselves in a world where political and social divides can feel like a broken bridge, we are called upon to bring together our collective effort and vision to rebuild. At the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (SPI), we believe that awareness and empathic bridging divides can help us move beyond these fractures. Our focus is on teaching Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to heal from trauma, which includes responsibility to address inequity and oppression in the global communities we serve.

A Continuous Journey

We have grown to understand that true change is a marathon, not a sprint, and recognize the importance of balancing ideals with realistic pathways. Grand proclamations can inspire, but they must be backed by transparent goals, honest self-reflection, and a willingness to acknowledge our missteps.

Global Context: Injustice and discrimination can manifest in varied ways across different continents and cultures.  We strive to adapt our approach to the areas in which we teach and remain open to diverse regional perspectives.

Evolving Awareness: We recognize that we will not always get it right, and each challenge—whether conflict, misunderstanding, or discomfort -- teaches us to listen more deeply, name harmful behaviors, and learn continuously.

Collaborative Action: We continue to engage a Chief Equity & Engagement Officer, as well as Trainers, alumni, and consultants to guide us in refining our curriculum, strengthening our organizational culture, and creating safer spaces for all.

Our 2025 Goals

Culture & Curriculum
We seek to create an inclusive environment that acknowledges and addresses historical and cultural trauma. Under DK’s advisement, we continue to revise our course materials to incorporate multicultural frameworks.

Safeguards
We recognize that rupture and repair are crucial for bridging divides and authentic learning. To that end, we will establish facilitator protocols for naming and repairing harmful conduct (e.g., misgendering, racist or transphobic language).

Accountability
SPI strives for continuous improvement and are committed to an ongoing journey toward justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We will set attainable goals, track our efforts, and adjust as needed.

Why This Matters

At the heart of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy lie our principles – organicity, non-violence, mind/body/spirit holism, unity, relational alchemy, presence and mindfulness -- essential for bridging divides. By championing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, we reaffirm the dignity of every individual we serve. Though SPI alone cannot mend systemic injustice, we are determined to be part of a global movement of transformation, standing with others who seek meaningful and lasting change.

Looking Ahead

The path toward equity and belonging is seldom straightforward, yet, as we stand at this pivotal moment in 2025—on the threshold of profound social, cultural, and political shifts—we choose hope over resignation.

Together, let us walk forward resolute in our belief that working to bridge rather than divide can transform how we learn, heal, and thrive.
