 What to expect
As leading pioneers in trauma research, Pat and Bessel have plenty to share and discuss.

Key areas include Bessel on the foundations of trauma and how it presents, and Pat on the application of SP as a means to promote healing, with video footage of client sessions.
Video demonstration and brief experiential exercises are included throughout the seminar. You will receive a pdf of slides, a printable copy of SPIs PEACE Resource Protocol to Modulate Activation and Build Resilience that can be handed out to clients
 What you will learn

  • Five specific relational mindfulness skills that you can apply in practice to help your clients identify (and change) their internal experience, so that they can stop trying to solve their past by talking about it over and over.
  • How to track parts of the self in the movement and posture of the body, and how to use the body to help these parts cooperate and heal.
  • How to help clients recalibrate a dysregulated nervous system through simple body oriented interventions.
  • Why posture is significant in a client’s well-being, and how to work with it in psychotherapy practice.
  • How to use the body to get in touch with emotions that have been pushed away.
  • How to use somatic interventions to work safely with memory so that it is resolved, not re-lived.
 Who should attend
  • Clinicians and counsellors already accredited in SP or interested in training/certification.
  • Practitioners interested in how body-oriented therapy can enhance their own practice.
  • Therapists who want to learn how to draw on the body to identify and work with parts of the self.
  • Anyone who wants to further explore what SP can achieve in a therapeutic context.
 Learning objectives
  • Examine the power of the body in treating trauma (5, 3)
  • Justify the role of movement to facilitate communication between internal parts of the self (2, 3)
  • Employ four (4) somatic resources to regulate arousal and foster resilience (1, 7)
  • Practice three (3) skills to help clients become mindful and improve level of functioning (2, 5)
  • Argue how working step by step with traumatic memory prevents reliving and promotes resolution (3, 4)

 Why Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Trauma first and foremost leaves its imprint on the body, yet, for many reasons, the body has historically been omitted from therapeutic enquiry. Body-oriented healing methods, such as SP, can help clients release the hold that traumatic experiences can have, treat the negative impact on the body, emotions and mind, and help people inhabit their bodies in ways that serve and enrich their lives.

Bessel van der Kolk MD is a physician, trauma expert and author of New York Times bestseller The Body Keeps the Score. His unique insight and guidance on what truly works for trauma healing, derived from decades of research and clinical practice, continues to inspire and equip thousands of clinicians globally.

Clinician, consultant, author, international lecturer and pioneer of somatic psychology, Pat Ogden Ph.D. is the creator of the SP method, Founder and Education Director of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, and a leading light in working with the body to resolve trauma. Fluent in a variety of somatic and psychotherapeutic approaches, Pat has over 45 years’ experience working with individuals and groups. SP trainings and courses are now available all over the world, including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
