What to Expect From the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for Trauma Themes Level 1 Training
Our introductory learning curriculum is a key part of the educational work of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, providing participants from across the profession with access to high-level trauma training, discussion, learning, and networking opportunities.
Throughout the programme, each attendee will work through six modules, grasping the basics of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to understand how Sensorimotor Psychotherapy can assist when supporting clients who have experienced trauma or face ongoing trauma that is affecting their well-being, behavioral patterns, or ability to move forward.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy enables practitioners to work with clients beyond the limitations of narrative or talking therapies, by using the body and somatic interventions to free clients’ from trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, attachment wounds, and more.
This leading trauma programme has been formulated to ensure all participants can work at their own pace around their obligations, practices, and professional commitments. It covers essential skills used when consulting with trauma clients and an introduction to how Sensorimotor Psychotherapy practitioners can adapt those skills to help manage more complex cases.
The Learning Schedule for MTZ Participants in the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for Trauma Themes Course
In total, the Level 1 course covers 96 hours of study, discussion, observation, and practical learning, with outcomes including:

- Knowledge about the impacts of trauma on the body and the connection between outward symptoms of trauma and somatic movements.
- A grasp of body-oriented interventions to identify, name, explore, and intervene in behaviors or movements caused by trauma in a safe, restorative manner.
- Learning why the sense of self can become fragmented due to traumatic experiences and how emotional, cognitive processing, and disrupted somatic patterns are interconnected.
- Understanding phased techniques, beginning with stabilization, and working towards long-term reduction of trauma symptoms.
These materials are split into three online learning modules, each covering 20 hours of education and managed at the participant’s convenience over a seven to nine-week period. The live online modules include two six-hour days hosted in real-time by the course facilitators and two live digital sessions during orientation and closing.
In addition, participants are expected to complete three hours of group-based or individual consultation with a Consultant or Trainer approved by the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, two of which should be individual sessions, to ensure the skills and theory taught are fully integrated and understood.
On completion of the course, professionals and practitioners may be eligible to claim Continuing Education credit. Ninety-three hours of CE credits are available for attendees with APA, ASWB, LMFT, and LPCC accreditations awarded by CME Outfitters and Lifespan, respectively. Other participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
